All people matter to God because He loves and cares about every nation. When you travel to another country or dive into another culture, you can see the need for salvation in the eyes of those who do not yet know the Lord. God has a compassionate heart and sends His people into missions so that His grace and mercy can be spread across the world.

The purpose of mission’s trips is to spread the Gospel! To do this, one must be familiar with Scripture. Dallas Willard, professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California, wrote in Spiritual Formation in Christ for the Whole Life and Whole Person, “Bible memorization is absolutely fundamental to spiritual formation. If I had to choose between all the disciplines of the spiritual life, I would choose Bible memorization, because it is a fundamental way of filling our minds with what it needs. This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth. That’s where you need it! How does it get in your mouth? Memorization.”

The Word of God is powerful! It’s living and active and is the only direct connection (outside of prayer) that we have with God! Francis Chan brought up a great point when he said that too many of us are quoting speakers and other books written about God, but we aren’t spending alone time in His Word! He said, “Getting alone with God is when the impossible happens!”

If we want to serve on the mission’s field, we have to get our hearts right with God. One way to do this is to dive deep into His Word. He created us all to be unique, yet we can figure out His plan for us by digging into the same source: the Bible. We are not only called to speak of God’s goodness, but we must BE God’s goodness to the world.

Chuck Swindoll wrote, “I know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, practically speaking, than memorizing Scripture. . . . No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends! Your prayer life will be strengthened. Your witnessing will be sharper and much more effective. Your attitudes and outlook will begin to change. Your mind will become alert and observant. Your confidence and assurance will be enhanced. Your faith will be solidified.”

If you or someone you know is planning to serve on a mission’s trip, consider memorizing the Scripture verses listed on the
