This past July, Mission Partners for Christ, a United States based volunteer healthcare team, had the privilege of traveling to Zimbabwe to serve the people living in four separate communities surrounding the region of the country’s capital, Harare.
After our medical service trip, one of our leaders, who resides in Zimbabwe, shared,
“All of the sites we did outreach at are in a dire situation for water. In Murombedzi, we served a large community where most people come to fetch drinking water. The situation is the same with Chegutu and Musorochena (Chinhoyi). People normally use shallow wells about 3-10 meters deep for their drinking water. The challenge is most of these wells have dried up because of the drought. We still have 2 months before the rains come. If we get water purifiers, this still won’t address the issue as the water is unavailable and not everyone can afford deep wells which is the only solution to help people. The people of Murombedzi travel close to 5 kilometers to look for drinking water! The water streams used for washing their laundry have since dried up.”
The cost of a borehole to obtain clean water at 100 meters deep is approximately $10,200. Currently, the Zimbabweans face much risk of injury from carrying heavy water containers as well as illness due to water-borne disease from parasites and pollutants.
Our medical team assessed 2,200 individuals in 4 days and noted that chronic joint pain, back pain, and parasites necessitated treatment to both adults and children. As long as they continue this pattern of obtaining shallow infested water, chronic medical treatment will be necessary, but they also lack the funds to care for their health.
